EV charging market growth by 2030
As the world becomes increasingly concerned about climate change and fossil fuel dependency, we’re exploring new ways to combat it. Electric mobility is one viable option to move us closer to a more sustainable and cleaner future.
Governments, businesses and individuals alike are growing fond of and understanding the importance of this shift from polluting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric ones.
The automotive sector has been shapeshifting due to the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs), but its impact is reaching far beyond the car industry.
Electric vehicles, and specifically their charging, present a lucrative business opportunity to industries such as hospitality, retail, parking, aviation, the public sector, real estate, and many more.
Suppose the EV market grows as expected; it will reach 240 to 380 million electric vehicles globally by 2030. In that case, the charging infrastructure will have to grow immensely to support this growth, precisely what the predictions say will happen. The EV charging market is expected to grow into a profitable multibillion-euro market by 2030. And that’s where the great opportunity lies for many.
If you’re in any of the previously mentioned industries, all this information might not even be news to you. The growth of the EV market is apparent as customers start to demand EV charging for their electric cars from hoteliers, retailers, parking operators, airports and more.
Electric vehicle charging offers immense opportunities to businesses like yours. If you want to explore how EV charging can serve as a value-added service to your business, this guide is right for you.

Understanding EV charging as a value-added service
In the competitive environment where many businesses find themselves nowadays, meeting customer expectations and offering attractive services is necessary for successful and profitable operations.
Electric vehicle charging quickly becomes a value-added service, soon to be commonly expected by customers everywhere. Let’s dive into the most attractive benefits EV charging can bring you.
Meet customer demand
In a survey we ran with Kantar, 87% of EV drivers say EV chargers on-site impact their choice of a retail store or hotel. Your customers are already asking for convenient EV charging options; if not, they will soon start. Meet your customer expectations and install EV chargers on site.
Attract new customers
EV charging opportunities also attract new customers looking to charge their cars. Your business immediately becomes attractive to a whole new customer group: EV drivers.
Thanks to a service called EV roaming, which works similarly to mobile roaming, EV drivers can charge outside their usual service provider’s network. Including roaming options in your EV charger setup opens up your EV chargers to any out-of-town or country customers – a big pull to your business.
Enhance customer loyalty
Customers who are satisfied with your EV charging services will likely return. EV charging helps you create a loyal customer base that appreciates your sustainable efforts.
Increase dwell time
EV drivers who leave their car charging at your site likely spend more time on your premises, using other services you offer. In an example of a shopping centre, where the average duration of a charging session is 2 hours, each customer could spend an extra 50 minutes of dwell time in your store.
Reach corporate sustainability goals
EV charging can become part of your larger environmental policy, help your business cut harmful emissions and drive positive environmental impact. For many businesses, reducing their CO2 emissions is not only voluntary but rather required.
Shine a positive light on your brand image
Associate your brand with a sustainable effort like EV charging to enhance how your customers view your brand. Customers are becoming more environmentally conscious by the minute and appreciate businesses that are on the same wavelength.
Develop new revenue streams
We’ve already mentioned that EV charging can increase customer dwell time. That directly translates to more purchases and higher revenue. If you’re looking for new revenue streams, EV charging can be the one. Setting up fees and ‘charging for charging’ can bring money directly into your pocket.
Can my business benefit from EV charging as a value-added service?
Electric vehicle charging benefits many industries, from automotive to real estate, but every industry has different needs, motivations and expectations.
Exploring EV charging as a value-added service is worthwhile mainly for the following industries:
• Retail
• Hospitality
• Aviation
• Parking
• Public sector
Customer story
Scandic
Scandic, the largest hotel network operating in the Nordics, saw an increased demand for EV charging in their hotels and decided to act. Due to Scandic’s strong sustainability focus, installing EV charging infrastructure in their hotels’ parking garages was a no-brainer.
The main thing Scandic sought in a charging solution was ease. They wanted to keep their focus on their core business – providing a great place to sleep, eat and meet. EV charging was a way to increase customer satisfaction, but not at the expense of their primary focus. That’s what they found in Virta.
Finding the perfect EV charging solution
If you’re a business in any of the abovementioned industries, your primary concern will likely be your customers and their satisfaction. EV charging is a service that can bring that satisfaction to them, but it’s not the sole reason for it. EV charging simply adds value to what you’re already doing well – running your core business.
Integrating EV charging into your business can be a lot to take on. You must choose and install the charging stations, take care of your EV drivers’ concerns, manage customer data, maintain your hardware, manage your electricity supply... we could go on and on.
Running EV charging operations can be complex, but a good service provider that takes care of it all can make it simple for you. You should be looking for a service provider that offers an outsourced and reliable charging solution, takes the complexities off your shoulders and lets you focus on your core business.
With a good service provider, EV charging should run smoothly on the side of your business and help you flourish.
EV charging? Only if it's smart
When deploying an EV charging service, you should prioritise smart EV charging solutions. What is smart EV charging, and why should you care? Smart charging allows you to create a secure data connection between the electric vehicle, the EV charging station, and you, the charging point operator (CPO).
CPO or Charging Point Operator is a company operating a pool of charging points. You can read more about CPOs and their responsibilities in this blog post.
Smart charging lets you monitor all charging sessions in real-time, and with cloud-based software, you can manage and optimise your charging network from anywhere.
No risk of compliance issues
The EV market is ever-evolving, and EV-related legislation and regulations constantly change and develop. Keeping up with the changes can be a tricky business, not to mention a time-consuming one. Look for a service provider who stays on top of the developing legislation and compliance issues on your behalf.
Let your brand shine
A comprehensive brand journey is often one of the top aspects that drive customer satisfaction and loyalty. EV charging should be fully integrated to represent your brand from the moment your customers enter your parking lot. Your priority should be a charging solution that allows you to customise all components of an EV charging business, from charging stations to the charging receipt, to reflect your brand identity.
Foster customer loyalty with data
Data is the new gold. In this digital era, data is a powerful tool that allows businesses to make informed decisions and optimise their operations. In the EV charging business, data can give valuable insights into customer behaviour, charging sessions and other patterns.
With this knowledge, you can optimise your operations, plan for the future, enhance your marketing efforts and customise your charging services to match your customers’ preferences. One way could be by offering loyalty programmes and incentivising your customers to charge at your premises more or for longer periods of time. Find a charging solution that gives you easy access to data so you can make the best use of it.
Tailor your pricing
One price does not fit all. Whether you want to offer discounted pricing to your loyalty customers or reflect the ever-changing electricity prices to enhance the transparency of your service, tailored pricing options are crucial.
Dynamic and tailored pricing gives you more control as it directly impacts your customers’ charging habits, fosters loyalty through transparency and can help balance your electricity demand.
Take control of your energy
Your site might have limited electrical capacity, and installing EV charging infrastructure can result in expensive electrical upgrades. But with the help of smart energy management, these upgrades become unnecessary.
Energy management solutions like Dynamic Load Management distribute available electricity to all EV chargers and ensure the power threshold of your site is never exceeded, no matter how many cars are charging. Find a solution provider that lets you easily manage your energy needs with quality tools.
Types of EV chargers
All businesses have different needs, so while a hotel’s best option might be installing standard EV chargers that charge a car in 8 hours overnight, a retail store might implement fast chargers to offer customers efficiency.
This chapter explores the different types of EV charging, their charging capacities and their best applications.
First, let’s quickly review the difference between AC and DC charging and find out what these acronyms even mean.
Let’s start with the basics - all electricity used to charge an EV leaves the charger as AC (Alternate Current), but to be of any use to the vehicle, it needs to be transformed to DC (Direct Current).
In AC EV charging, the car converts AC electricity into DC with a built-in onboard charger, which prolongs the charging time.
On the other hand, DC charging transforms the current to DC electricity from the start, so there’s no need for conversions inside the vehicle. That’s why DC charging is much faster but often pricier.
Standard AC charging
Standard AC charging, sometimes called ‘slow’ charging, has an electricity output of up to 22 kW and is perfect for long-term charging at airports, hotels and other destinations.
The charging takes any time between 2 and 8 hours, so your customers can enjoy their stay at your premises and leave with a fully charged car.
Fast DC charging
DC charging can still be divided into fast and ultra-fast, or high-power or rapid charging.
The fast DC charging electricity output ranges from 50 to 150 kW. With its 0.5 to 2 hours of charging time, it best suits locations such as restaurants, retail stores, and grocery stores.
Your customers don’t have to wait for hours and hours to get their cars charged, but they still have enough time to explore your core business and other services you offer.
Ultra-fast DC charging
Ultra-fast DC charging is the quickest type of EV charging. Nowadays, it still acts as a premium service that offers efficiency and convenience, which customers are willing to pay a bit more for.
Ultra-fast DC charging takes fast charging to another level. With an output of 150 up to 600 kW, it charges an EV in less than 30 minutes. There’s an ever-increasing demand for ultra-fast charging possibilities, so investing in ultra-fast chargers will surely pay off.
Customer story
FREY
FREY, a French real estate investment firm specialising in developing and operating outdoor retail parks in Europe, has placed the environment at the centre of its operations for over a decade.
Installing EV charging stations at their retail parks was automatically integrated into FREY’s development projects. After FREY became aware of the amount of responsibility installing, running and maintaining EV charging stations takes, they embarked on a search for an EV charging partner.
And that’s where Virta came in.
Soon after installing their first EV charging stations, they started witnessing a growing demand for charging possibilities and decided to increase the number of EV chargers on their sites.

Integrating EV charging into your business
In the previous chapters, we recapped the different types of EV charging available. Now, it’s time to discuss the steps you need to take to implement EV charging into your business.
Analysing your location
Before investing in hardware, you should analyse your location’s suitability for EV charging infrastructure. Consider the number of registered EVs, the availability of public charging stations in the area, the traffic volume, and the road infrastructure nearby your location. Also, don’t forget to assess the potential customer demand, so you can plan accordingly and not install too few or too many EV chargers.
Funding the infrastructure
Implementing EV charging into your business is an investment that comes with hardware and installation costs and more. This investment might seem high initially, but remember it translates into considerable benefits for your business and will return to you later.
You can also complete an ROI analysis to determine how long it will take before your EV charging stations start making a profit for your business.
At Virta, we’ve developed a simple ROI calculator so you can paint a picture of your own EV charging business.
Choosing the proper hardware
As we’ve explored in the previous chapter, there are three different types of EV charging:
- Standard AC charging
- Fast DC charging
- Ultra fast DC charging
Consider the specificities of your business and your customers’ needs to choose the right one or a combination of all.
Installation
To install your charging infrastructure, you will need the help of a certified electrician. Before the installation, it’s also a good idea to check your site’s electrical capacity and see if any changes in the electricity system need to be made. If you’re planning to install DC chargers, it’s especially crucial to check if the voltage of the site’s grid is sufficient. If there’s a need for an upgrade, a professional electrician can execute the electrical inspection and create a process plan.
As we’ve already mentioned, smart energy management can rid you of extra costs related to upgrades to your electricity system.
Maintenance
Once your EV chargers are up and running, you must keep track of firmware updates, monitor their condition and functionality, take care of their maintenance and deal with the warranty and claim process if the hardware should break.
PRO TIP:
Take advantage of grant schemes and incentives
The switch to electric mobility is in the best interest of governments everywhere. That’s why many countries offer various grant schemes and incentives for deploying EV charging infrastructure to support electric vehicle ad- option further.
Grant schemes and incentives can often make up to 75% of hardware and installation costs and are worth looking into.
Here are some examples of grant schemes available in the UK:
- Workplace charging scheme: For businesses looking to install EV charging stations for employees.
- EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets: For small and medium-sized companies looking to install EV charging stations for staff and company fleets.
- The on-street residential charge point scheme: For local authorities looking to install on-street EV chargers for resi- dents without access to a home charger.
- EV charge point & infrastructure grant: For landlords looking to install multiple charging sockets on their property.
