Self-healing: Boost reliability with automatic fault recovery for your EV chargers
The reliability of your EV charging network is crucial. That’s why we’ve developed a self-healing functionality for our customers. This functionality boosts your charging network’s uptime by solving up to 30% of charger issues automatically, making sure your chargers are always online and ready to charge.
What does self-healing in EV charging mean?
No EV driver wants to stop at an EV charger to fill in their depleting battery, only to find the EV charger out of order. That’s why reliability is one of the main aspects of a successful EV charging network. In fact, in our annual EV driver study, 74% of EV drivers said they value EV charger reliability above all else.
Reliable EV chargers mean functional, online chargers ready to charge your EV drivers’ vehicles at all times without interruptions.
While manual inspection and intervention are one way to resolve EV charger faults and errors, there is also an automated way to tackle the issue—a self-healing functionality.
Self-healing is the Charge Point Management System's (CPMS) ability to automatically resolve issues in real-time, reducing the need for manual intervention.
At Virta, we’ve developed our own self-healing functionality, available to all our CPO customers.
Benefits for Charge Point Operators
Maximises uptime
Your drivers rely on your charging network to be available whenever they need to charge. As we already mentioned, reliability is often the number one priority for many EV drivers. A self-healing functionality makes sure your chargers are up and running at all times, maximising uptime and keeping your EV drivers happy.
Auto resolves error codes
Error codes, whether related to connectivity issues or hardware malfunction, can interrupt the system and cause charger downtime. Self-healing automatically resolves these error codes with no need for manual intervention.
Reduces manual rebooting
‘Have you tried turning it off and on again?’ Similarly to computer issues, rebooting the EV charger is often needed to solve the problem. But doing it manually amounts to a lot of time, especially when dealing with a large charging network. Self-healing enables automatic reboots, saving time and reducing operational costs.
Saves time and improves efficiency
Dealing with charger errors manually means time spent on diagnosing the issue, trying to remotely resolve it, or even sending a technician to the site. A self-healing functionality can solve between 20-30% of issues, so you and your team can focus on what’s important instead—growth.
How does Self-healing work?
- The Charging Point Operator (CPO) activates the self-healing functionality by defining which error types the functionality should be activated for in the Alert settings of our CPMS, Virta Hub.
- An error message is received from the faulted charge point.
- A reboot command is sent from Virta Hub when there is no ongoing charging event.
- If the charge point is unable to reboot itself, we will try once again.
- A reboot happens, and if it’s successful, the issue is resolved.
- If the issue cannot be fixed automatically, the problem may need further attention from the operational team.
Virta Hub: Simple charging business management
Self-healing is only one of the many features designed to make your life as a charging point operator easier. Enable this functionality on our cloud-based platform, Virta Hub, that makes it easy for you to monitor, manage and optimise your EV charging operations remotely.
