Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is a ground-breaking technology that has the potential to change the adoption of electric mobility, especially in heavy-duty transportation.

The Megawatt Charging System is no longer just a dream of the future. At Virta, charging beyond the 1,000 kW mark is currently being under development and planned to be deployed in 2025 as part of a pilot project in Sweden. The 1.2 MW system is part of Hedin Supercharge, which operates an extensive charging network in Sweden, together with Virta.

But that's not where the work ends. Virta is currently planning and implementing more new megawatt charging projects in Germany and other countries.

In this blog post, we take a closer look at the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), its importance for the EV charging industry and its role in the growing segment of commercial electric vehicles.

What is the Megawatt Charging System?

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is a high-performance charging system that has been specifically developed for fast charging of electric vehicles with very large battery capacities. It's ideal for charging electric trucks, buses or other heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

The MCS standard enables charging with an output of up to several megawatts, which significantly shortens charging times and increases the efficiency of the charging process. This technology is an important step in taking electromobility in transportation to a new level and making the transition to sustainable energy sources faster and smoother.

MCS is less relevant for passenger cars, as their smaller batteries are not designed for such high charging capacities and would only be unnecessarily stressed.

Also, the economic operation of MCS for charging passenger cars does not make sense, as the investment costs are significantly higher compared to conventional charging systems.

Batteries in passenger electric cars are designed for DC charging capacities of 50 kW to 350 kW, which is usually sufficient to quickly bring the charge level up to 80%.

New call-to-action

Importance of the MCS for the EV charging industry

The introduction of megawatt charging stations marks a turning point in the EV charging industry. With the ability to charge large batteries in a short time, the MCS offers a solution to one of the biggest obstacles to a wide spread of electric mobility: charging time.

This is especially important for heavy-duty transportation, where time equals money. The ability to charge e-trucks quickly and efficiently increases the attractiveness and competitiveness of electric vehicles in this segment.

Focus on the transportation industry

The transportation industry is facing a revolution as more and more companies switch to commercial electric vehicles. As the demand for environmentally friendly transportation solutions increases, electric mobility is experiencing a steep growth.

The MCS plays a crucial role in making this transition a reality by providing the charging infrastructure required to operate e-trucks efficiently.

New call-to-action

How does the MCS affect the future of e-mobility?

The introduction of the Megawatt Charging System is a big step towards a sustainable future. With the ability to drastically reduce charging times, the MCS will drive the widespread adoption and use of electric vehicles in heavy-duty transportation.

Overall, the Megawatt Charging System shows that the future of EV charging is already a reality. The charging industry is facing an exciting period of growth and innovation driven by technologies like the MCS.
